The Food (Trans – Fat) Regulations, 2022, establish requirements for controlling trans-fat in food products. It mandates that no person shall sell, offer for sale, display, keep for sale, or advertise for sale any packaged food product containing Trans-Fats, unless the total amount of Trans-Fats per 100g or 100ml of the product is clearly declared on the label of the packaged food. The effective date has been postponed and is now scheduled for January 2025.
Limits on the Trans – Fat in food
The regulation mandates that persons involved in the retail or wholesale sale of any food product intended for consumers must ensure that the trans-fat content, excluding naturally occurring Trans-Fats in animal fat, does not exceed 2% of the total fat in the product. Further, anyone supplying food products as ingredients to manufacturers of food products intended for final consumers must inform the manufacturer if the trans-fat content, excluding naturally occurring trans-fats in animal fat, exceeds 2% of the total fat in the product.
